Top Steampunk Novels for Teen Girls
I never realized what a variety of the best Steampunk novels is available and written especially for teen girls. These novels have it all, mystery, science, and adventure. If you are having trouble finding gift ideas for teen girls, you’re not alone. When I was a young girl, I was picky and not particularly easy to buy for, but I always loved a good book to curl up with and lose myself in. These Steampunk themed novels are aimed at the teen girl who loves to read a book that has a good plot and takes place in a fantasy world with a strong resemblance to the Victorian era!
What is Steampunk?
Steampunk is a fusion of science fiction, dark Gothic fantasy, and the genteel manners and customs of the Victorian era. There is an emphasis upon machinery, whether it’s a steam-powered zeppelin or intricate mechanical gears like those in a clock. Many of these contraptions exist only in the author’s mind. The origins of Steampunk are said to derive from futuristic literature known as Cyberpunk, with an emphasis upon advanced technology and a dark, bleak worldview. However, the “steam” in Steampunk originates from a nostalgia for kinder, simpler times when machines were a wondrous new invention and more often powered by steam than electricity. The combination of the two results in an aesthetic that is rooted in Victorian times but with overtones of the future as it might have been conceptualized at the turn of the 20th century.
Some of the very best Steampunk novels give homage to popular literary figures of the 19th century, most notably Sherlock Holmes. As many teen girls know, Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective has most recently been brought to life by the actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, in the popular BBC series, “Sherlock.” You can find Season 1 of “Sherlock” on DVD here.
